The Natural Park of the Aurunci Mounts

The Natural Park of the Aurunci Mounts extends between the provinces of Latina and Frosinone, at the border of Latium with Campania Region and includes part of the districts of ten towns, among which Formia, and some of the old villages where the time seems to be stopped, like Itri, Spigno Saturnia Campodimele, Lenola, Ausonia, Esperia are to be visited.
The part of the mountain chain that goes parallel to the sea with up to 1.300 m peaks and high steep cliffs fallig into the green uncontaminated and transparent water, runs on the 15 km of rocky shore that goes from Sperlonga to Gaeta and Formia creating small inlets with white sand and bewitch with its incomparable beauty.
A few km away from the coast the barren lands on the mountains are the habitat of sheeps, goats and poor villages where simple people produces home sausages and cheeses worthy to be mentioned.
The agro-silvi-pastoral activities make the landscape a puzzle of cultivations, pastures and natural vegetation whose contours are bramble's and hawthorn's bushes and uncultivated spaces. Agricolture is still carried traditionally, with scarce use of the modern equipments in a land where the olive trees are widely planted till 800 m O.S.L. together with the carob tree, the legumes in between and prickly-pears along the roads. A poor land only few km from the rich coast, where the rural landscape appears hard and fast, with old-fashion peasants where sometime it happens even to buy a good wine and a rustic chicken.
