Just in the middle of the Country, The Umbria Region, the so called Heart of Italy, is the Holy Land that gave nativity to Saint Francis, the Italy's Patron, and many other Saints of the Middle Age.
The Green Umbria, the only peninsular region without coastal areas, is a small Region situated between Lazio, Abruzzo and Tuscany, the Marches and Emilia Romagna, divided in two provinces: Perugia and Terni. The main river is the Tiber. The mountains cover 53% of the total surface, 41% the hills and only 6% the plainland, so that this land drains huge quantity of water to form lakes and numerous springs - to be mentioned the charming Piediluco lake, the scenic Clitumno spring and the magnificent Marmore Waterfall, all of incomparable beauty -. The evergreen valleys run after each other scattered by little villages and magnificent Medieval beautiful art towns such as Perugia, Gubbio, Assisi, Spoleto, Todi and Orvieto. All the other well preserved and mantained centres of cultural, gastronomic and musical events during the whole year, are worthy to be visited and lived all the year long. Craft, often at high art levels, is much spread through this region, with ceramics, iron, copper and wood handycrafts. The calm and restful environment gives everywhere, in this Region with human dimension, a sense of relax.
