The Argentario is a splendid cape
of about 600 meters that seems to rise from the sea, a peninsula
in the umpolluted sea water of the Tyrrhenian Sea, one and half
hour drive from Rome, with two beautiful ancient fishermen villages
now famous holiday resorts. Porto Ercole is one of them, on the southern
side of the foot of the Mount Argentario, where the famous artist
Caravaggio died in 1610. |
| The cape is joined to the mainland from two tightened sand
dunes that form a beautiful lagoon. The mainland is that part of the Southern coast
of Tuscany called Maremma, where cows graze free under the control
of the "Mandriani", an Italian version of the US "cow-boys". |
 |
|
The Cape Argentario is connected
to the mainland by two strips of sand called The Tombolo of the
Feniglia and The tombolo of the Giannella, both covered by a pinewood
and rich of fauna. The coast of the Argentario is of enrapturing
beauty. |
| Nice small sandy beaches follow crags and beautiful coves;
small grottos with the most colorful glares (like the blue cove)
and immense caverns rich of stalactites and stalagmites (as "La
Cala Dei Santi); |
 |
|
Sandy
beaches but also reefs like "le Viste", "le Cannelle"
or the "Spiaggia lunga".
A few miles in the sea to reach with a public boat the marvellous
isles of Giglio and Giannutri, for unforgettables excursions. |
