Ostuni primeval settlement rose over a small hill at an altitude of 300 meters above sea-level and 4 miles far from the Adriatic sandy shores. It is circled by a stone wall with several defensive towers.
There is a contrast colour with the blue sky and sea.
|
The coast stretches for many kilometres and the jagged coastline is covered by the green mediterranean maquis.
Tourist could choose between a lot of sandy beach or cliffs.
The house to which we refer dates back to the Spanish period, as the whole historical centre developed on the primeval site. It has been constructed on a rock basement with 5 meter high stone domical and barrel vaults and has roughcast partitions.

It results from incorporating three ancient independent abodes and it develops its space on different levels, connected through a short corridor and flights of stairs.
The total space measures 80 square meters plus a 15 meter terrace for sun bathing situated on top of the house, from which you can range over the olive groves and the Adriatic Sea. |
The house has been recently restored playing great attention to maintaining the ancient original patterns; the interior decoration has pieces of antique furniture.
Two small bathrooms are available one with shower and the second with tub and shower: there are also two separate cooking tops with hot plates.

 |
It can accommodate up to 6 persons in two double beds and two single beds, one of which placed inside a small rock alcove, once used as water cistern.
The house is located between the city wall and the Romanesque Gothic Cathedral, just in the middle of the shopping and restaurant area. |
Ostuni was founded by the Messapi and became residence for many populations: among them Greeks, Romans, Arabs and Normans.
A small section of the wall and one city gate, still existing, were built by the Emperor Frederick the second, king of Sicily, in the XII century.

 |
 |
Owing to its whitewashed city wall and houses Ostuni is dubbed “The white city”.
It is connected by highway and train to the Brindisi International Airport that is 23 miles away. |
From Ostuni you can travel easily to the historical cities and villages of the Puglia Region rich in architectural and art treasures such as Lecce, Martinafranca, Taranto, Alberobello etc. etc.
