SELF-GUIDED
EXCURSION

Cinque Terre is a very well known area, so called because there are a group of five fishing villages which span twelve kilometers on the Coast line, in the Italian Region of Liguria, which is North of La Spezia.
These 12 kilometers of meandering paths, which are only partially paved, will take you for an unforgettable walk. For the less active, a train ride is available and stops at every village. There is also a very comfortable boat ride that can be taken with a day pass and this gives you the right to board and to debark at every village. The trip starts at the picturesque little village of “Riomaggiore” and then continues on to “Manarolo”, “Corniglia”, Vernazza”, and “Monterosso” which is the last jewel of the Cinqueterre.
The “Via Dell‘Amore” is a pedestrian path of a stretch of the coast, a small part of the trail between Riomaggiore and Manarolo, which can be discovered in less than a half hour.
Very charming and with beautiful views, the path is flat and paved, and can accommodate all kinds of people.
There are great views of the cliffs and vineyards and the sea. You would never think to find such incredible scenery.
The “Via Dell’ Amore” is suitable for everybody.
Most trains stop at each village, but some go straight to Monterosso, so be sure of which train you board.
The path from Riomaggiore - Manarolo - Corniglia - Vernazza - Monterosso - Levanto is a pretty long walk, but for those of you who are used to walking a distance it is very enjoyable. Also you can always take a break and jump on the train if you get tired, and finish your excursion this way.
Scenic fishing villages along the beautiful cliffs which overlook the sea at the foot of the rugged hills and the beautiful seascapes make for breathtaking photos of this very special area.
A 5 Euro ticket entitles you to enter into various areas, such as aquariums, Museums of the Park, but the natural beauty of these places will surely take all of your time.

Far from “off the beaten track”, this part of Italy is crowded with tourists. As we said, the “Via Dell’ Amore” is a well organized and paved 1 km path along a beautiful cliff overlooking the sea, but does not compare with the Blue Trail, which is much more challenging. This is a dirt path that goes from Manarola to Monterosso. The trail winds between the forest and along a cliff. The top of the mountain is incredible and one must pause to savor the view. The trail then immediately heads down into the heart of the villages, Corniglia, Vernazza, and Monterosso. This is an unforgettable walk in the heavens, but on a rugged unpaved goat path scattered with roots, rocks and very narrow paths to navigate.
The stretch between Vernazza and Monterosso is especially less traveled and accessible, and only for the most adventurous.
Do not forget to include a trip to Portovenere between visits!
For those who love to bike, a ride on the paths on the crest of the hills will offer breathtaking and beautiful scenery of the Cingueterre and the Maritime Alps on one side and the Apennines to the Apuan Alps and the Gulf of La Spezia on the other. |
