Two apartments in a narrow long
street of the 11th century (all houses have the same age), in
the medieval centre of Gaeta.
The apartments, at side of the house of king Ladislao, are on
the same floor on the top of a tall building - no lift, sorry
- recently carefully restored, same as the whole area that partially
fallen in ruin during the second World War and only in the seventies
refurbished and brought back to the ancient splendour. |
The terrace of each apartment overlooks the small
ancient Roman port, with an astonishing view of the charming
little town and its harbour, one of Italy's best-kept secrets.
In the afternoon, when a strong wind rises while the sea rests
calm, the Gulf become filled with windsurfs. |

At twilight, waiting for the dinner
with a good glass of wine in the hand, leaning your elbows on
the parapet, you will feel intense emotions in front of such
splendour. Just those terraces make these apartments unique,
a precious property occasionally given for a fantastic relaxing
holiday. |
| Simply but tastefully and comfortably furnished
with some vintage furniture, each apartment consists of a large
living room with sofa bed French size (2 children or 2 squeezed
adults), 2 double/twin bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and the large terrace
for "al fresco dining" in face of a superb scene.
Two hours from Rome and one from Naples,
by car, one hour by train from both, Gaeta lays on the promontory
Mount Orlando, which strikes into the Tyrrhenian Sea enclosing
the "Gulf of Gaeta". |

In the small port a small outboard
is possible (to be arranged before arrival if in June/August)
for visiting the coast of the promontory and ahead along the
7 miles of unpolluted sea, rocky and the white sandy beaches
between Gaeta and Sperlonga.
The Aragonese fortress dominates from the Mount Orlando the
promontory and the Sea around. |
| Daily excursions to the wild and wonderful Pontine
Islands by hydrofoils are available from Formia, a village four
km far, on the other side of the harbour. |

The coast, from the shore of "
serapo "- between mount Orlando and the hill of "catena" - to
the shore of "S.Agostino", consists of small, green promontories
on which small ancient sighting-towers against Saracens take
place. In between that promontories small bays with or without
white sand (Fontania, Ariana, Arenauta and S.Vito) make this
coast one of the most beautiful and panoramic of the Tyrrhenian
Sea. |
Gaeta was and is residence of Bishop's
palace.
Greek civilization greatly influenced
the people in this area, although Gaeta was not a Greek colony.
During Roman times this town was known as a famous resort with
a good harbour for ships. |

The via Flacca (a Roman road built
in 184 B.C., ) - which still connects Gaeta with Rome - leading
towards the town of Sperlonga, was lined with beautiful villas,
gardens, swimming pools, nymphaeums and mausoleums. |
| The best preserved is the Villa of Emperor Tiberius,
located just below the Sperlonga Museum. Two mausoleums are
still in Gaeta: Plancus Mausoleum on the mount Orlando which
is the best preserved one in all of Italy, and Atratino Mausoleum.
The Flacca road, built in 184 B.C., still connects Gaeta with
Rome. |

A
SMALL HISTORY
The origin of the
name of Gaeta is from a book written by Virgil who lived in
the 29th century B.C. This book is the source of
the stories of the birth of Rome.
The story tells of Enea, who was a refuge of
Troy, who came to this area looking for new land, as Troy
had been destroyed. He came here in a ship with the survivors.
Among these survivors was his wet nurse whose name was Cajeta.
Dukedom before the end of the first millennium,
after dominated by the Normans and then by Swabians, Angevins,
Aragons, Gaeta, because of its position on a promontory of
land jutting out into the sea, became a fortified city and
finally the second capital of the reign of Napoli.
In the 19th century faced three sieges
and on November 25th, 1848 Pope Pio IX took refuge
here, after the proclamation of the Unified Italy. During
nearly one year was called the "second State of the Church".
Dominated by the huge Aragonese fortress and
the belltower of the Romanesque Duomo, everywhere on the territory
of Gaeta you will feel its history.
A prestigious nautical-club and a tourist-port
very well equipped for the standing of any kind of boats is
positioned in the center of the town.
A lot of cheap shops and boutiques, air conditioned cinema,
live music in the roads, ball rooms on the shores and a great
lot of restaurants, trattorie, pizzerie and pubs for all kind
of pockets but in general inexpensive, will enjoy your summer
holydays.
After 5 pm fishing-boats return to the port with
their wide variety of fish hail to be sold in the picturesque
fish-market along the promenade until 8pm.
During July (week ends) and August the town and
its shores are crowded with holidaymakers, but in the rest
of the year you will fully enjoy this place where bathers,
fisherman and sailors' life elapses confidently and quietly.
IMPORTANT
Due to its location, this apartment could be noisy during
the night in July and August cause intense
traffic on the
street, particularly during the week-ends.
