Porta Castello ,sleeps 4+2
Tarquinia ( Maremma) Viterbo |
 |
Porta Castello is a very nice newly redecorated apartment, located in the etruscan important town of Tarquinia, in the heart of Southern Etruria with over 3000
years of history. After centuries as a major Etruscan capital and
medieval township, Tarquinia now has numerous world-famous archaeological
sites and an intense cultural life.
A mere one hour drive or train ride from Rome, the city is 133m a.s.l. strategically built on a plateau which overlooks the Marta River valley and the nearby Tyrrhenian Sea.
|
This countryside is part of the wild fascinating Maremma, which covers the northern Latium and the southern Tuscany by the seaside, close to Tolfa and enjoying the view of the Argentario Promontory and the Island of Giglio, enchanting to any visitor.
The city of Tarquinia itself is fascinating, with its charming corners, tiny alleys opening onto squares where beautiful churches were traditionally the heart of everyday social and religious life.

The apartment Porta Castello, in an ancient building with massive walls, has a private entry (for two apartments only) up a stone staircase from the large square of Santa Maria in Castello, named after the beautiful, well preserved XIV century church which appears like a picture from the splendid view in the bedroom window.
The apartment consists of a double and a twin bedroom, with a
wardrobe, bed tables and iron wrought beds.
The twin bedroom has
also a chest of drawers.
A corridor connects the sleeping area with
a comfortable and spacious living room with a very high wood-beamed
ceiling.
A dining table with chairs for 6, a fireplace, a
sofa and two armchairs provide full comfort for those who wish to
stay at home. |
| Two windows open onto a nice (neighboring) private garden.
From a third window the sea, in the far distance.
The windows and the opposite entrance door - when open - allow for
fresh air to circulate even during warm seasons.
A spiral stairway leads to a large studio/loft with writing desk,
a double sofa bed, with a television and videotape player.
The kitchenette is well equipped even for the longer periods that
the owners, an Italian architect (who loves cooking) and his American
wife, Rome residents, have spent in this peaceful little town.
A dishwasher, fridge and freezer, oven and stove make kitchen use easy and comfortable.
In the corridor a bathroom with bath (with shower) and
a washing machine.
The apartment is tastefully furnished with some
antiques and selected pleasant country-style pieces. All windows
are equipped with mosquito screens
Grocery and all types of shops are within walking distance.
Bars and restaurants of good level are right in town; the local cuisine is tasty and based on very good fresh ingredients, which guest could also buy from the market and cook at home. |

In town, a rich Etruscan Museum has a big collection of artifacts that help illustrate their history and lifestyle, also depicted in D.H. Lawrences famous book, Etruscan Places.
Just outside the town, the Etruscan Necropolis includes the most beautiful and well-preserved tombs of the ancient world, which bear witness to the cult of the dead of these fascinating and enigmatic people.
Minutes away, in Tarquinia Lido, the old Salt Marshes, very impressive, are since 1980 a 170 hectares preserved area, where, in season, herons and flamingos take undusturbed rest during their migrations. |
| Tarquinia became a major town during the 7th Century B.C. under the influence of a citizen of great wealth and vision, whose name was Luchmon, becoming then the 5th King of Rome with the name of Tarquinius Priscus. Two more Roman Kings came from the Etruscan capital, they were named Servius Tullius and Tarquinius the Superb. Peculiar is that Roman Empire grew immensely and became so powerful that the war against the Etruscans, finally won by Rome, decided the end of all Etruria, including Tarquinia, which gave birth to both conquerors and conquered. |

A good bus service connects the town to the train station and with Tarquinia Lido, a more modern town on the sea 15 minutes away, so a car is not strictly needed.8 km far is the golf club and 20 km the Aquapark.
Interesting places like the cities of Tuscania, Viterbo, Capalbio and the Mount Argentario are reacheable in less than a hour drive.
This apartment can be not only comfortable for everyone, but also a real surprise for those who were not aware of the beauty and the historic interest of the city of Tarquinia overlooking a fantastic countryside, close to the sea
